In my Pilates classes I cater for mixed abilities and give different options for the exercises so that newer class members or people with ailments can take the easier options, or people with prior experience of Pilates can choose to challenge themselves more. if you can bring your own yoga mat that's great, no special clothing is required, anything loose fitting is fine. A paperback book or cushion can sometimes be useful to bring along to rest your head on.
Will I be capable of Pilates?
I know that a first lesson can seem daunting and so the teaching style aims to let everyone work at their own pace. Pilates is quite an introverted activity and class members who have been coming longer are usually wrapped up in themselves rather than competing with others. If you are able to get up and down on to the floor and are in reasonable health then there is no reason to be worried about coming to my class. It does take a few lessons to get used to breathing and co-ordination.
Am I too old,too fat, too unfit, not well enough?
Many older people are very good at Pilates and on occasion really show the rest of the class up, I don't know why this is but my thoughts are that it could be attributable to an upbringing where walking was a necessary part of life and therefore core strength is more developed.
Overweight people also often take well to Pilates and perform the exercises very accurately and have good body awareness.Pilates can tone and strengthen the body and may help to prevent injury when undertaking other forms of exercise.
I have had clients suffering from fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, sarcoidosis and arthritis. They all do very well and I give alternative exercises if necessary, they are another group who often exhibit good core strength possibly because they have needed to develop core strength to cope with their ailments. In these cases I do ask that you check with your GP before starting the course.
Will Pilates be too easy for me?
After reading the other sections you may now think that Pilates will be too easy. I also give instruction on how to make exercises more difficult and how to increase the challenge. Once you have learn correct technique then you will able to challenge yourself and work at your own pace in this sense too.
